Travin had to walk quickly to catch up to Sandvaal. He could have trotted, but he didn't want to look like the man's pet dog, following faithfully behind. Instead, he kept him in sight, but stayed a few metres back. A few of the soldiers gave him a glance, but no more than that. None challenged his presence, or even seemed especially interested.
Larnard led the general to a building a street over from where they'd landed. It looked new, or close enough to it. Fronted with stone, it was cold and imposing.
Travin supposed that was the point. It matched the general perfectly.
"Will this do, sir?" Larnard asked eagerly.
Travin wondered if he could adopt the same grovelling tone if he had to.
"It seems adequate," the general replied, casting his gaze over the place. "It will need a fence around the perimeter and a gate at the front here." He gestured.
"Consider it done." Larnard pressed his palms together and bowed.
"I'll take a look inside before any improvements are made," Sandvaal went on as though he hadn't heard. "It may not be as suitable as it appears from the outside."
Larnard's expression faded. His eyes widened. "I'm sure it will beâuh, I'll show you inside." He ushered them forward.
The general smirked at Larnard's back. Perhaps he also didn't care for the captain's ingratiating manner either.
Travin pitied Larnard for a moment. At least the man was trying.
Inside, the building was enormous, and just as cold as the outside. A front foyer led to what appeared to be offices. A corridor led further inside, but Travin couldn't make out what was down there.
"This will do, thank you Larnard. See to the fence." Sandvaal gave him a nod of dismissal and the man ducked back out to the street.
"Will do for what?" Travin blurted out. "Are you going to tell me why I'm here?"
The general stepped inside an office and placed his bag on the desk already in place. Evidently the building had been prepared for whatever use the man would put it to.
"You'll be helping me," Sandvaal replied.
"With what?" Travin didn't know how to take notes and the general wasn't short on guards.
"Helping to find magin," Sandvaal replied. He looked around Travin to one of his guards. "Are the others here?"
"Yes, sir," the man replied smartly. "Barracks have been set up to the rear of the building, as you ordered."
"Good. Show me." Sandvaal stepped around Travin, but indicated for him to follow.
Travin did so, with unmasked confusion. He was no soldier. If the general thought he was, he'd be disappointed. Furious even.
Travin's confusion continued as they walked through the building and into the barracks. Out a window Travin spied a training yard. Targets lined one side, ready for archery or some other practice. By the look of them, they hadn't been used much. At least not yet.
Several people sparred with swords in the centre of the yard, sweat pouring freely down their faces.
Inside the barracks, however, sat several men and women, none of who looked like soldiers.
